There are many diets that claim to help us lose weight or get healthier.

But sometimes it’s overwhelming when there are so many choices.

We are often told to cut carbs and eat lean meat or go completely vegan.

And some diets even have catchy names that we like, like the paleo diet. This particular diet also seems logical when the rules are explained.

The paleo diet encourages people to eat foods that could have been obtained when humans were hunter-gatherers, i.e. meat, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds.

No dairy, grains or sugar. Makes sense, doesn’t it? But is it really good for you?

We spoke to nutritionists to find out the truth.

David Wiener, training and nutrition specialist at Freeletics, the AI-powered fitness and lifestyle coaching app, said: “A paleo diet is made up primarily of vegetables, fruits and nuts, all of which are building blocks of a healthy diet, which can help you lose weight or maintain optimal weight.

“Because the paleo diet resembles what humans ate thousands and thousands of years ago, it completely avoids processed foods, sweets, artificial sweeteners and trans fats.

“Eliminating them from your diet will obviously make you lose weight, but in today’s society it’s not the easiest diet to sustain. Additionally, paleo diets lack dairy and whole grains, which are essential for a balanced diet.

“Dairy products and whole grains are very important sources of fibre, vitamins, protein and calcium. They are also generally more affordable and accessible, so eliminating them from your diet could do more harm than good.

“The best kind of diet to follow is a well-balanced diet, one rich in vitamins and nutrients.”

He added: “Yes, paleo can help you lose weight, but nothing works better in the long term than eating a balanced, healthy diet. Also, restrictive nutrition is not sustainable in the long term, so focus more on feeding your body the right essential nutrients, proteins, carbohydrates and fats”.

While Rebecca Jane, nutritionist and founder of NutriPOD, a nutrition and lifestyle clinic, adds, “The Paleo diet is based on eating foods similar to those of our ancestors in the Paleolithic era. Avoid whole grains, legumes and dairy products which arrived when agricultural processes began 10,000 years ago.

“There are diet-related health benefits, including weight loss, improved blood sugar, better blood pressure control, lower triglycerides, and better management of our appetite, and this is mainly due to the consumption of whole, unprocessed foods.

“However, although this diet includes a wide range of healthy food groups, it excludes whole grains and legumes which are rich in essential fiber and vitamins and dairy products which are excellent sources of protein and calcium. .

“More studies are needed to show the possible risks with this diet and the long-term effects of nutritional restriction from excluding certain food groups.”

Nataly Komova, RD and fitness expert at JustCBD noted, “Eating high amounts of saturated fat found in animal protein can trigger an increase in unhealthy cholesterol levels, which are not good for your overall health.

“Limiting your intake of dairy products and whole grains can reduce your intake of dietary fiber, calcium, protein and other essential nutrients.

“It could be quite difficult for people following a vegan diet as it excludes legumes such as beans.

“But a plant-rich diet increases fiber and other nutrients that can help with blood sugar management. Regular consumption of the paleo diet can increase insulin sensitivity.

“Increasing consumption of healthy foods with limited intake of salt, dairy products, and processed foods can contribute to abdominal fat loss and overall body fat reduction.

“And it can improve your satiety and reduce hunger pangs, which helps with weight loss.”
